Please note that we have discontinued our general bike rental program. We still have two tandem bicycles available for booking and rent, but no regular bicycles.

Our rental tandems are fully tuned-up before every rental and optionally (no additional fee) come with front & rear lights, and a lock. We do not supply helmets. Helmets are not mandatory in Alberta for adults.

Rates

  • $50/day

  • $80/overnight

  • $120/week

  • $240/month

We accept cash, credit, debit, or PayPal. A $400 deposit is required. Deposits, which can be paid via cash, credit card, or PayPal, will be returned in full upon return of the bike providing there is no damage beyond normal wear and tear, and all accessories are present. A portion of the deposit will also be withheld if bikes are returned late, according to the daily rate. Note that due to credit card and bank processing procedures, after a deposit is returned to your credit card, it may take up to 21 business days for the amount to become available again on your card (though usually the delay is much shorter).

For more information about our bike and trailer rental service please email info@bikeedmonton.ca.

Pick-up and Returns

Please note that all rental bike pickups and returns must be made at our South Community Bike Workshop location during our regular operating hours. Rates apply regardless of whether or not we have regularly scheduled hours (i.e. if we're closed on a Friday, or if you are unable to use the shop on a Women, Trans & Non-Binary program day, you still have to pay for the full time that you have the bike). Overdue rentals are charged by the day. Any rentals left outside of our facility while we are closed will forfeit the deposit.

Note that we do not rent bikes from our north location at this time. All rentals occur at our south location only.

Tandems

EBC has two tandem bicycles available for rent. The first (pictured below) is a red, hand-built frame, built in Alberta by Arvon Stacey of Arvon Cycles. The bike is perfect for everything from wedding photos to weekend trips in the river valley to extended bike tours.

The captain (front) position is 55cm (requiring a rider of about 5'10" or taller), and the stoker (rear) position can be configured to fit a wide range of heights, from youth up to 6' tall adults.

The second tandem bike available for rent is a vintage purple CCM mixte 3 speed with white balloon tires and is perfect for casual rides and photo opportunities. It is suitable for riders who are not tall enough to ride the Arvon tandem.

A $400 deposit is required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do I have to be a member?

A: While we encourage people to be members, as it supports our services (including the rental program, which does not generate a profit), it is not necessary to rent a bike. Cargo trailer rentals are required to have memberships.

Q: Can I rent a bike or trailer indefinitely?

A: No, bikes and trailers must be rented for a specific period of time.

Q: Can I reserve a bike?

A: Yes: please contact us.

Q: How long can I rent a bike for?

A: You can rent a bike for as little as a day or as long as a month.

Q: What if my rental bike breaks down?

A: Bring it to BikeWorks and we will repair it as quickly as possible. Please note however, that you are responsible for returning the bike in good condition and that costs for repairs stemming from anything but regular wear and tear may be deducted from your deposit. Also, the renter is responsible for transporting the bike or trailer back to BikeWorks should repairs be required.

Q: Can I pay for a rental bike when I return it?

A: Payment must be made in full at the beginning of the rental.

Q: Do you rent car racks?

A: No, though we occasionally have used car racks for sale for low cost. You will have to come into either of our shops to see of there is something available that is compatible with your vehicle. Note that tandems are generally too long to transport on a car rack.

Q: Can I extend my bike rental if need be?

A: We will attempt to accommodate rental extensions whenever possible. Appropriate advance notification to us must be given via email, and you may need to bring the rental bike back to the shop for an inspection and to pay the additional rental fee before or on the original due date.

Q: Do you rent tandems, recumbents or other such bikes?

A: We have a professionally hand-built Arvon tandem as well as a 1960's 3-speed tandem available for rental.

The captain (front) position of the Arvon tandem is 55cm (requiring a rider of about 5'10" or taller), and the stoker (rear) position can be configured to fit a wide range of heights, from youth up to 6' tall adults.

The captain and stoker positions on the vintage purple tandem can accommodate adults ranging from 5'3" to 6' in height.

Q: Are there any other organizations or businesses that rent bikes in Edmonton?

A: Bike rentals are also available from several commercial bike shops in Edmonton. We are aware of the following:

If you know of any other organization or business that offers this service in Edmonton, please let us know!

Bicycle Cargo Trailer Rentals

Bike Edmonton also has an 8 foot cargo trailer and two 5 foot cargo trailers available for rent to members. Members can rent any of them for $20/day, subject to availability.

The trailers are rated to 300 lbs and have an interior width of 24” (perfect for fitting large tote bins). Consider them for car-free moves or moving oversized objects that won’t fit in a car: lumber, mattresses, or couches! We’ve even used them to move a few refrigerators.

If you’re interested in specifics, all of our trailers are made by Bikes At Work.

What do I need if I want to rent a trailer?

Pre-booking

Contact us at info@bikeedmonton.ca at least 48 hours before you wish to rent a trailer so we can ensure availability and arrange pre-payment. Please keep in mind that we are a mostly-volunteer run organization.

Membership

While we rent the tandem bikes to the general public, trailer rentals are only available to current members. Not a member yet? Join today!

Credit Card Deposit

To ensure the trailers remain in good shape for everyone to use, we require a $500 deposit paid by cash or pre-authorized on credit card (this money isn’t actually charged to the card, and will be released upon return of the trailer on time and in good condition).

Photo ID

Please have photo identification to verify your credit card.

Rental Fee

Trailers can be rented for $20/day. Maximum rental period is 7 days. Rental fees need to be paid in advance to secure the trailer rental booking.

Your Bicycle

Most bikes will work with our trailers but we recommend hard-tail mountain bikes for heavy loads. If you're unsure whether your bike is suitable, check with one of our friendly volunteers, or send a photo to us clearly showing the entire left profile of the bicycle.
