Night Lights Bike Lights Workshop

Come decorate your bike for night riding in style! On June 21, we'll be going on a midnight moonlight mystery ride, so take advantage of this chance to light it up. Most of the lights available at this workshop require no electronics skill/work whatsoever (essentially, insert batteries and they work). Some require very minor soldering/wiring. You will work under the guidance of someone experienced in electrical engineering.

Please register ahead of time by e-mailing [email protected], as parts are limited. This workshop will on June 21 (moved to Friday, before the ride), from 6pm-8:30pm at BikeWorks South (10047 80 Ave, entrance in rear lane).

The workshop is free, but materials/parts are extra (and very reasonable). Click on the photos below for prices.

31-Hour Bike Repair-a-thon and Paint-Your-Bike Day

24-Hours-DSC_5133.jpg

In case our regular hours never work for you, or in case you just need to do a marathon session at the shop to finally get your bike built up or repaired, BikeWorks South is open from Saturday, June 8 from 10am until 5pm on Sunday, June 9. Shop time is by donation! (Regular prices apply on bikes and parts.) Come at 1pm. Come at 6pm. Come at midnight. Come at 5am! We'll be open, and ready to help you.

(We might be a little bit groggy by 4am... you may wish to bring your marvellous volunteers treats and a hot drink when they're helping you with your bike.)

We're going to set up racks and hangers outside for you to paint your bike! EBC members get a 10% discount at The Paint Spot (a block away). No painting in our shop proper (fumes!), but we'll have space out back. Please bring your own safety equipment (air masks, eye protection) and be considerate of others.

Strip your bike, paint it, go for dinner, come back and put it back together. Woo!*

(*If you paint your bike this quickly, it's probably going to be kind of sloppy. If that's all you want/you don't care about the fine details, then do it! But please don't expect to be able to fully strip your bike, do a professional paint job, and rebuild your bike in 31 hours. You might have to finish a different day.)

Ride of Silence

In 2009 Edmonton took part in the International Ride of Silence. We cycled past the majority of Ghost Bike Memorials that had been erected over previous years. It is time we had another Ride of Silence to remember the people that have died over the years and the people who continue to be injured on our streets.

Join cyclists worldwide in a silent slow-paced ride in honor of those who have been injured or killed while cycling on public roadways.

We will meet at 7pm at BikeWorks South (10047 80 Ave) and ride to the site of Isaak Kornelsen's memorial. If you cannot ride with us for the route, please join us at 102 St and 82 Ave (Isaak's memorial) when we stop here for a moment of reflection.

We will then continue to the ghost bike we installed on Tuesday, located at 127 St and 107 Ave.

From there, we will head to City Hall, where the ride will conclude (around 8:30pm).

Please come out to support this ride and send a visible message to the city.

This ride is done in silence and is to show our respect for those people that have died on our streets.

The ride of silence will not be quiet.

http://www.rideofsilence.org/main.php

On May 15, 2013 at 7:00 PM, the Ride of Silence will begin in North America and roll across the globe. Cyclists will take to the roads in a silent procession to honor cyclists who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roadways. Although cyclists have a legal right to share the road with motorists, the motoring public often isn't aware of these rights, and sometimes not aware of the cyclists themselves.

In 2003, Chris Phelan organized the first Ride of Silence in Dallas after endurance cyclist Larry Schwartz was hit by the mirror of a passing bus and was killed.

The Ride of Silence is a free ride that asks its cyclists to ride no faster than 20 km/h, wear helmets, follow the rules of the road and remain silent during the ride. There are no sponsors and no registration fees. The ride, which is held during the US National Bike Month, aims to raise the awareness of motorists, police and city officials that cyclists have a legal right to safe use of the public roadways. The ride is also a chance to show respect for and honor the lives of those who have been killed or injured.

DSC_2117-sandy-bike-lane.jpg

It is the City of Edmonton's responsibility to maintain bike lanes so that they are safe and functional year-round. They currently prioritize bike lanes at the same level as alleyways.

Despite repeated requests from many citizens via 311, bike lane and multi-use trail maintenance in 2013 has been dismal, and several weeks after making requests many routes continue to be dangerous or unusable.

We at EBC couldn't wait any longer for the contra-flow bike lane at the curve around Victoria Promenade, which has been covered with a thick layer of sand, gravel and glass. Avoiding those hazards means veering out into the outside bend of (often fast moving) oncoming traffic.

So we took a broom from home and swept up.

Ghost bike installation

A Ghost Bike memorial will be placed this morning at 11am to mark the death of a cyclist following a collision with a pickup truck on Friday, May 3rd, 2013. This is the first traffic fatality of 2013 that involves a cyclist. The Ghost Bike will be placed at 107th Avenue and 127th Street. "This will be the first Ghost Bike that we have installed this year — unfortunately, based on past years, this won't be the last one. In 2008 three Ghost Bikes were installed and in 2009 and 2010 there were 2 in each year. One was placed in each of the past two years. There are many more cyclists on our roadways than 10 years ago," says Ghost Bike coordinator Michael Kalmanovitch. "Many cyclist deaths could be avoided if the city and provincial government would provide better cycling infrastructure and education — for cyclists and motor vehicle drivers. We need to implement the Bicycle Transportation Plan and save lives," adds Mr. Kalmanovitch.

Ghost Bikes, bicycles painted all-white and placed at the site where a cyclist has been killed, are small and sombre memorials for cyclists killed by automobiles. The installations are meant as reminders of the tragedy that took place, and as quiet statements in support of the right of cyclists and pedestrians to safe travel. They are reminders that we need to cooperate when we are sharing the space on the roadways so that we can all get safely to our destination.

"The death of another cyclist highlights the need for us to move forward on the city's bike route network. Simple bike lanes reduce collisions by 50% by providing a space where cyclists can feel comfortable and ride safely, allowing motorists and cyclists to get to their destinations with less conflict. Over the past decade, experience and research from cities across North America has converged on the same conclusion: the best way to improve public health, save lives, and prevent collisions is to build high-quality dedicated cycling infrastructure. Until we genuinely prioritize safety for all road users, including the ever-increasing numbers of pedestrians and cyclists, we'll continue seeing these tragedies," says EBC Executive Director Christopher Chan.

"If you look at where we have installed ghost bikes across the city you will find that quite a lot of the deaths have occurred in the same area as the one that we are installing today", observes Mr. Kalmanovitch (see http://ghostbikes.org/ghostbikemap/Edmonton)

Adapted Bicycle Rodeo & Loan Pool Launch

ycbt.png

Children with special needs can now borrow a bike designed to give them their first taste of the freedom of cycling thanks to a unique Edmonton program. We will launch our borrow-an-adapted bike program with a bike rodeo:

  • Date: Saturday May 11, 2013
  • Time: 11 am to 3 pm
  • Location: Elves Special Needs Society, 10419 159 Street

You Can Ride Two is an Edmonton-based partnership between pediatric physiotherapists, occupational therapists and the Edmonton Bicycle Commuters’ Society (EBC). The program, initially developed to teach children with special needs to ride a two-wheeler, has expanded to all forms of cycling thanks to several bike and monetary donations and partnerships with other community agencies.

From wheelchair to the trails

You Can Bike Too works to increase access to cycling for children unable to ride a standard bicycle. Children are matched with bicycles in our loan pool and modifications are made as needed to ensure the bike is best suited to each child.

Alberta-Bike-Swap.jpg

Want to enjoy the fine weather, but you need a bike? Or do you have bikes that you no longer need, and want to turn them into a bit of cash (without the hassle of having to handle the sale yourself)?

The Edmonton Bike Swap, an annual one day bike buy & sell, is happening this Saturday, May 11, 2013 at Glengarry Arena (13340 85 St)!

Bring your bike to sell it. Or come buy a bike if you don’t have one! Or both.

Want first pick? Volunteer! No mechanical or bike experience is necessary.

All bikes in the swap should be able to be safely ridden away, so they will be checked by EBC’s volunteer mechanics for safety.

For full details, please see our swap page or visit the Alberta Bike Swap site. They also have an FAQ.
