Do It Yourself (DIY) & Do it together (Dit) Repair QUESTIONS
-
DIY (do-it-yourself) and DIT (do-it-together) repair provides you with the tools, space and parts to do your own repairs and projects. It is great way to learn about bikes, develop your mechanical skills and save money.
DIY and DIT repairs are for anyone wanting to learn about bike mechanics and work on their own bike. We can give you a little bit of help, or a lot of help, depending on what you need.
-
DIY hourly rate: $10/members & $20/non-members

If booking an appointment, book only one DIY/DIT appointment per day. Duplicate bookings will be cancelled, but you can stay for more than an hour if space allows.

During the busiest times, you may need to wait or come back another day if we are busy and you don’t have an appointment, but generally we can accommodate walk-ins most of the time.
We give priority patrons with appointments so that people with demanding schedules can still use our space. You can book an appointment here. Please book only one DIY space per day.
-
We can give you as much or as little help as you need to work on your bike.
If you’d like to use our space to work independently, you’re welcome to do so, and we can stay completely hands off (so long as you don’t damage our tools!).
If you’d like to explore bike repair mostly on your own with a little bit of guidance, we can show you where to find tools and parts, give cursory help assessing your bike, and point you towards useful resources for repairs.
If you’re not yet confident working on your bike like more direct guidance, we’re thrilled to welcome you to the world of bike maintenance with DIT (do-it-together) repairs and we can go at the pace you need to learn.
Unlike a conventional bike shop, with DIY/DIT repairs our volunteers provide guidance and can give you some hands-on assistance when needed, but will not do the work for you. We believe in empowering cyclists to feel more confident maintaining their bikes and to do that we need you to be involved.

We have a wide range of general and bike specific tools. Each workbench has the most commonly used tools.
You will need to ask to use more some of the specialized tools that are more easily damaged (thread taps, etc.).
Always ask for help if you’re unsure how to use tools correctly. We are not responsible for damage caused by their misuse. If you damage our tools through misuse, we may charge you a replacement fee.
-
You’re responsible for finishing your work in the time available and cleaning up before you go. We cannot store personal bikes at our shops.
If your bike needs multiple repairs, stick to one repair at a time so that you’re not left with a bike in pieces at the end of the day.
-
We have a wide selection of used parts and a limited selection of essential new parts.
We can usually provide parts to make most bikes safe and functional, but they may not match, be in nice visual shape, and so forth. For very modern or niche part designs our supply is more limited.
-
Gas engines are not permitted in the shop.
We can help you with mechanical aspects of e-bikes, but are not equipped to deal with electrical or motorized aspects of these bikes.
We are also not equipped to work on e-motos or dirt bikes.
Some types of work (using some cutting tools, for example) are only allowed with supervision. Ask in advance if you’re unsure.

The Park Tool Repair website provides an excellent, comprehensive, and free resource to help with repairs, from the simplest adjustments to the most technical installations.
For older bikes (e.g. 90s and earlier), Sheldon Brown’s website also offers an invaluable resource.Youtube is another excellent resource if you’re a visual learner, and for troubleshooting more specialized issues, though of course not all advice on Youtube is trustworthy.
The Edmonton Public Library also has many books on bikes and bike repair.
Bike Edmonton has many repair guidebooks which you are welcome to use at our shops.
