The Alberta Public Interest Research Group (AP!RG) is a University of Alberta student-run, student-funded, non-profit organization dedicated to community-led research, education, advocacy, and action in the public interest. APIRG provides administrative, informational and technological resources to help student and community working groups to transform social concern into effective action. APIRG provides meeting facilities and other support to EBC.

Earth's General Store

On Sunday, May 5, from 10am-6pm, EBC members shopping at Earth's General Store will receive a 10% discount on all purchases (including sale items!). Patrons who purchase an EBC membership for the first time will receive a 15% discount. EBC will also be on hand doing free tune-ups at Earth's General Store from 11am-3pm. Enjoy a barbecue from 12pm-4pm, too! Earth's General Store provides equipment and expertise (and coffee, and pretty much anything else) to EBC whenever we ask.

If you walk, bus, or ride your bike to the store, you will receive a token worth 10 cents that you can direct toward a number of non-profit organizations. Operation Fruit Rescue Edmonton

In 2011, OFRE won a micro-grant from NextGen’s MEAET event and used that grant money to partner with EBC to create a pedal-powered apple crusher. Do you have a fruit tree that you don’t have the time or the energy to harvest? Are there more berries than you can handle? Do you want to share your fruit tree with members of your community? If the answer is yes, OFRE can help! OFRE will send volunteer pickers to private residences to pick fruit upon request of the home owner. In addition to collecting fruit, we also organize canning & preserving events during the harvest season.

Established in 2009, OFRE is a non-profit organization. Our project grew out of an interest in locally grown food, raising awareness about food security, and establishing urban, local connections with our food.

Music Is A Weapon

Music Is A Weapon is an Edmonton-based non-profit organization dedicated to empowering communities through art. Through promotion of local artists, inclusive celebrations, and community collaborations, our team of inspired volunteers strive to raise awareness about social justice while developing a socially conscious network. MIAW collaborates with EBC on various innovative bicycle-related projects, including bicycle-powered music and movie events.

Bylaw 2202: Parkland Bylaw

Covers activities in City parkland, including many shared-use paths in the river valley. The purpose of this bylaw is to regulate the conduct and activities of people on Parkland in order to promote the safe, enjoyable and reasonable use of such property and to protect and preserve natural ecosystems for the benefit of all citizens of the City.

1. Every person using an Improved Trail or an Unimproved Trail shall:
   1. yield the right of way to slower moving people;
   2. alert anyone about to be overtaken by giving an audible signal a reasonable amount of time before overtaking; and

2. A parent or guardian of a person who is less than 18 years old shall not authorize or knowingly permit the person to operate or ride as a passenger on a bicycle unless that person is properly wearing a safety helmet.
3. No person shall operate a bicycle on which a passenger who is less than 18 years old is riding unless the passenger is properly wearing a safety helmet.

Bicycle equipment 113

1. A person shall not ride a bicycle at nighttime unless the bicycle has the following:
   1. at least one headlamp but not more than 2 headlamps;
   2. at least one red tail lamp;
   3. at least one red reflector mounted on the rear.
2. A person shall not ride a bicycle unless the bicycle has a brake.

Use of Highway and Rules of the Road Regulation

Bicycles are not motor vehicles, but all the rules of the road that apply to all vehicles (as opposed to just motor vehicles) also apply to bicycles. Below are some of the laws that are specific to bicycles.

Use of lamps, etc. 55

1. At any time on a highway during the period of night time or when, due to insufficient light or unfavourable atmospheric conditions, objects are not clearly discernible on the highway at a distance of at least 150 metres ahead, a person shall not do any of the following:
   2. have a bicycle in motion on the highway unless the lamp or lamps with which the bicycle is required to be equipped are alight;
   4. have a vehicle in motion on the highway unless,
      1. in the case of a self‑propelled vehicle that is less than 0.8 metres in overall width, the vehicle is equipped with one headlamp that complies with the requirements of the Vehicle Equipment Regulation and that is alight,
      2. in the case of a self‑propelled vehicle that is 0.8 metres or more in overall width, the vehicle is equipped with 2 headlamps that comply with the requirements of the Vehicle Equipment Regulation and that are alight
   6. have a cycle on the highway unless the cycle is equipped with one reflector that is located at the rear of the cycle

Rights and duties of operator 75 Unless the context otherwise requires, a person who is operating a cycle on a highway has all the rights and is subject to all the duties of a person driving a motor vehicle under Part 1 and this Part and Division 2 of Part 5 of the Act.

Operation of cycle 77

1. A person who is operating a cycle on a highway
   1. shall keep both hands on the handlebars of the cycle, except when making a signal in accordance with this Regulation or shifting the gears of the cycle,
   2. shall keep both feet on the pedals or foot rests of the cycle other than when stopped,
   3. shall not ride other than on or astride a regular seat of the cycle, and
   4. shall not use the cycle to carry more persons at one time than the number for which the cycle is designed and equipped.
2. A person who is operating a cycle, other than a motor cycle, on a highway shall operate the cycle as near as practicable to the right curb or edge of the roadway unless that person is in the process of making a left turn with the cycle.
3. Notwithstanding subsection (2), a person who is operating a cycle, other than a motor cycle, on a one-way highway in an urban area shall ride as near as practicable to either curb or edge of the roadway unless that person is in the process of crossing from one curb or edge of the roadway to the opposite curb or edge of the roadway.
4. Notwithstanding subsection (2), a person who is operating a cycle, other than a motorcycle, on a highway that has shoulders
   1. in the case of a highway that has paved shoulders, shall operate the cycle on the right shoulder, and
   2. in the case of a highway that does not have paved shoulders, shall operate the cycle as far to the right of the roadway as practicable,

   unless that person is in the process of making a left turn.

5. A person who is riding as a passenger on a cycle
   1. shall not ride other than on a regular seat of the cycle that is designed to be used by a passenger, and
   2. shall keep both feet on the foot rests provided for the use of the passenger riding on the seat.

Travel single file 78 A person who is operating a cycle on a highway in the same direction in the same traffic lane, except when overtaking and passing another cycle,

1. shall not operate the cycle adjacent to another cycle travelling in the same direction, and
2. in the case of a cycle other than a motor cycle, where more than one cycle is travelling in the near vicinity of and in the same direction as another cycle, shall operate the cycle directly in line with and to the rear or front of the other cycle.

Vehicle Equipment Regulation AR 122/2009 also states:

Alberta Traffic Safety Act

The TSA and its associated regulations govern cyclists' use of highways in Alberta. It applies, in general, to highways, which are defined as:

(p) “highway” means any thoroughfare, street, road, trail, avenue, parkway, driveway, viaduct, lane, alley, square, bridge, causeway, trestleway or other place or any part of any of them, whether publicly or privately owned, that the public is ordinarily entitled or permitted to use for the passage or parking of vehicles and includes

1. a sidewalk, including a boulevard adjacent to the sidewalk,
2. if a ditch lies adjacent to and parallel with the roadway, the ditch, and
3. if a highway right of way is contained between fences or between a fence and one side of the roadway, all the land between the fences, or all the land between the fence and the edge of the roadway, as the case may be,

but does not include a place declared by regulation not to be a highway;

The Good Life

As a vehicle to building community, the shop is a one-stop-shop biking support hub in Calgary’s downtown core offering reconditioned/recycled bikes, repair space, tools and instruction, and workshops. The shop provides a safe and supportive atmosphere for novice and experienced riders alike. Further, The Good Life is community meeting space open for use to environment and community minded groups. The Good Life collaborates and builds relationships with other community groups as well as offering work experience while focusing on the ideal of mutual aid.

Rotary Club of Edmonton Urban Spirits

The Urban Spirits Rotary Club contributed $6000, expertise, and countless hours towards setting up an electronic curriculum for The Spoke.

Beverly Optimist Club

The Beverly Optimist Club generously donated $2000 towards safety equipment for youth participants in The Spoke. That amount of money goes a very long way in an entirely volunteer-run program. The Beverly Optimist Club also donated $5000 towards adapted bicycles for EBC's You Can Ride 2 program and made up half of the volunteer force for our April 26, 2014 fitting event. We truly appreciate their support!

Stollery Charitable Foundation

The Stollery contributed to our partners to help with initial set up costs of The Spoke. Without this assistance, the program never would have been able to launch in our new home at BikeWorks North.

The Paint Spot

Show your membership card for a 10% discount at The Paint Spot. Just 1.5 blocks north of BikeWorks South! At the end of each year, The Paint Spot makes a donation to EBC based on a percentage of EBC member purchases. The Paint Spot has supplies, workshops and courses, and gallery showings. Since 1985, this proudly Canadian, artist-run visual art centre has been dedicated to enabling artists, from beginners to professionals, to realize their artistic vision.

Bike Root

The Bike root is an incorporated not-for-profit society, a University of Calgary student club, 100% volunteer run, and a community bicycle shop with tools and knowledge to teach you how to fix your bike.
